The Environment Authority marked World Environment Day, observed on 5 June each year, with a dedicated event under the theme “Inspired by Nature… For the Climate… For Our Future,” bringing together specialists and young people engaged in environmental work.

The event formed part of wider efforts to raise environmental awareness and highlight national initiatives supporting sustainability and the protection of natural resources.

A National Scientific Reference

The occasion saw the launch of the book “The Environmental Atlas of the Sultanate of Oman,” a scientific and knowledge reference documenting the country’s most significant environmental and natural assets.

The atlas reviews biodiversity, natural resources and the environmental characteristics of each governorate, supported by maps, data and contemporary environmental indicators. It is designed to strengthen environmental knowledge and support researchers, decision-makers and those working in the environmental field, helping to embed the principles of sustainability and the conservation of natural resources for future generations.

Climate Change Efforts Reviewed

The programme included a working paper reviewing the Environment Authority’s efforts to address climate change. It covered developments in national environmental policy, the preparation of national reports, and mitigation and adaptation work, in addition to initiatives linked to protecting the ozone layer, the launch of the Manakh platform, and strengthened international cooperation in support of clean energy policies and pollution reduction.

Community Initiatives on Stage

The event also featured the “Basmatna Ghair” team, which presented a working paper titled “Rehlat Athar” (A Journey of Impact) charting its work delivering environmental and community initiatives. The team’s contribution highlighted its role in encouraging sustainable behavioural awareness, empowering women, and organising ecotourism camps, alongside examples of initiatives targeting different segments of society.

Knowledge as Infrastructure

Publishing a national environmental atlas gives Oman a shared evidence base — one that planners, researchers and investors can work from when assessing projects, siting infrastructure or setting conservation priorities.

That emphasis on data, evidence and applied science runs through the Scientific Conference programme at Oman Climate Week 2026, taking place 14–16 September at the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre in Muscat.
