Environment and natural resources occupy a strategic priority within Oman Vision 2040 — the foundation from which the Environment Authority has built interconnected national policies and plans to conserve ecosystems and secure the sustainability of terrestrial and marine life. The Oman Environment Strategy translates the Vision’s goals into concrete implementation programmes.

Combating Land Degradation

In addressing the challenges of land degradation, the National Plan to Combat Desertification to 2030 sets a clear line of action, comprising projects and initiatives to restore degraded land and strengthen sustainable management practices.

These efforts align with Oman’s international commitments and the Sustainable Development Goals, reinforcing the Sultanate’s position as an active partner in responding to global environmental challenges.

Reserves, Reintroduction and Enforcement

The Authority’s programmes rest on an integrated approach that includes establishing and managing nature reserves to protect habitats and threatened species, and delivering reintroduction programmes for species of national importance such as the Arabian oryx, the reem gazelle and the Arabian gazelle.

Alongside this sits the enforcement of legislation regulating hunting and preventing the illegal trade in wildlife.

Evidence-Based Decision Making

The Authority stresses the importance of scientific monitoring, documentation and studies that support decision-making, ensuring policies are built on accurate scientific data and strike a balance between protecting nature and meeting national development needs.

The Directorate General of Biodiversity and Nature Reserves said the effectiveness of ecosystem protection programmes is assessed through an integrated system of national and international tools and indicators measuring the extent to which environmental objectives are achieved and the impact of those programmes on the state of the environment.

That assessment draws on a range of environmental indicators, including the state of biodiversity, the number of protected species and the area of protected land.

Technology in the Field

Expanding monitoring networks and deploying innovative technologies gives Oman better resolution on where ecosystems are recovering and where pressure is increasing — turning conservation from periodic survey work into continuous observation.

Nature-based solutions in drylands, biodiversity and ecosystem restoration feature in the Strategic Conference programme at Oman Climate Week 2026, taking place 14–16 September at the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre in Muscat.
