The Environment Authority has reviewed the results of its work between 2020 and 2025 at a joint meeting held in the Wilayat of Ibra in North A’Sharqiyah Governorate, confirming that Oman continues to deliver on its national and international commitments to protect the environment and conserve natural resources under the Oman Environment Strategy and the targets of Oman Vision 2040.

The meeting was attended by Mahmoud bin Yahya Al Dhahli, Governor of North A’Sharqiyah, and Dr Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority.

An Institutional and Legislative Mandate

The session set out the Authority’s institutional and legislative framework, which covers proposing policies and strategic plans, safeguarding environmental integrity and conserving ecosystems, protecting nature and wildlife, assessing and monitoring climate change, and representing Oman in international and regional forums while implementing the conventions the Sultanate has joined.

Twenty-Two International Conventions

The Authority confirmed that Oman has acceded to 22 international conventions and protocols, reflecting its commitment to international environmental cooperation. These include the Convention on Biological Diversity, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Convention to Combat Desertification, and the Basel, Stockholm and Rotterdam conventions on chemicals and waste.

Trees, Reserves and Digital Systems

Among the headline figures presented were 72 million trees and 32 declared nature reserves — the two numbers the Authority has placed at the centre of its account of national progress toward carbon neutrality. The reserve network spans terrestrial, marine and integrated terrestrial-marine sites, protecting habitats and species across the country’s varied ecological zones.

The Authority also pointed to the digital achievements delivered across several strategic tracks, most notably natural resources and biodiversity, where data systems now underpin monitoring, permitting and reporting.

From Commitment to Delivery

Taken together, the review presents a picture of environmental policy moving from planning into measurable delivery: expanded vegetation cover, a wider protected-area network, and a stronger institutional and data foundation for the decade ahead.

That shift from ambition to implementation is the organising theme of Oman Climate Week 2026, which takes place 14–16 September at the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre in Muscat under the banner “From Vision to Implementation: Leading Climate Action.”
