Oman Vision 2040 environment goals are being realized through significant milestones in environmental protection, as official reports confirm the Sultanate has achieved remarkable progress in preserving natural resources and biodiversity for future generations. The alignment between Oman Vision 2040 environment priorities and on-the-ground conservation outcomes demonstrates the effectiveness of integrated national planning.

Expanding the Network of Natural Reserves

Oman has expanded its network of natural reserves to more than 30 protected areas, encompassing diverse ecosystems across the country’s terrestrial, marine, and coastal environments. These reserves play a critical role in conserving endemic species, protecting fragile habitats, and maintaining the ecological balance that supports both wildlife and human communities.

The expansion of protected areas is a cornerstone of the Oman Vision 2040 environment strategy, which places environmental sustainability alongside economic diversification as a national priority. The protected area network now covers approximately 5.76% of the country’s total land area, with plans to expand further in the next planning cycle.

Commitment to Biodiversity Conservation

The growth of Oman’s protected area network reflects a broader commitment to international biodiversity targets, including contributions to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Through scientific research, community engagement, and cross-sector partnerships, Oman is working to ensure that its unique natural heritage is safeguarded for generations to come.

Key conservation programs include wildlife reintroduction projects that have released hundreds of Arabian oryx, sand gazelles, and Arabian gazelles into protected habitats. Marine biodiversity surveys have documented 56 species of marine mammals, while the Blue Carbon Project continues to restore mangrove forests along the coastline. The National Biodiversity Survey has documented 53 terrestrial species using 2,400 camera traps, generating six million images and 96 terabytes of scientific data.

Environmental Performance Recognition

The Sultanate’s environmental achievements have received international recognition, most notably through the historic 94-position leap in the Environmental Performance Index to reach 55th place globally. Oman also secured second place regionally in both the Gulf and the Arab world, and was honored with the Arab Excellence Award for sustainability and environmental guardianship.

Green Economy and Investment

The Oman Vision 2040 environment framework recognizes that environmental protection and economic growth must advance together. Nine investment contracts worth OMR 44 million have been signed for natural reserve development, creating opportunities for eco-tourism, sustainable resource management, and green technology innovation. The waste recycling rate has reached 39%, supported by 85 dedicated facilities.

Aligning with Vision 2040

Oman Vision 2040 identifies environmental sustainability as one of its core pillars, recognizing that long-term economic prosperity depends on the health of the natural environment. The environmental achievements documented in the Tenth Five-Year Plan (2021–2025) demonstrate that Oman is translating this vision into measurable results.

From the Environmental Performance Index leap to the 10 Million Trees Initiative, the expansion of marine protected areas, and the establishment of comprehensive air quality monitoring, Oman Vision 2040 environment goals are firmly on track and aligned with global sustainability aspirations.
