World Environment Day Oman 2025 was marked by the Sultanate’s strong commitment to ending plastic pollution, as the Environment Authority joined countries around the world in observing the annual event on June 5th under the 2025 theme “End Plastic Pollution.” World Environment Day Oman celebrations highlighted the country’s leadership in addressing one of the most pervasive environmental threats of our time.
Leading the Fight Against Plastic Pollution
Oman has positioned itself as a regional leader in addressing plastic pollution through a comprehensive approach combining strict regulations, community initiatives, and international partnerships.
The Environment Authority issued Decision No. 8/2024, which bans the use of plastic shopping bags under a phased implementation plan that began in July 2024 and extends through July 2027, gradually covering all commercial sectors. This legislation places Oman among the most proactive countries in the Gulf region in tackling single-use plastics.
Research and Awareness
The Authority conducted groundbreaking studies on microplastic pollution in the marine environment, documenting the presence and concentration of microplastics across Oman’s coastal waters. These studies provide essential data for developing targeted interventions and monitoring the effectiveness of plastic reduction policies.
Workshops on the health and environmental risks of plastic water bottles highlighted sustainable alternatives such as glass and cardboard containers. A dedicated seminar on plastic waste recycling was held to promote the circular economy approach, bringing together waste management professionals, entrepreneurs, and policymakers.
Annual beach clean-up campaigns target plastic waste along Oman’s coastline, mobilizing thousands of volunteers from schools, universities, and community organizations. Educational programs raise awareness about the environmental impact of plastic use, fostering behavioral change at the grassroots level.
International Engagement
Oman participated in the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee working to develop a legally binding international instrument to end plastic pollution, with a focus on sound waste management and the circular economy. The country continues to align its environmental policies with international agreements and Oman Vision 2040, which aims to create pollution-free environments.
Oman’s delegation contributed to negotiations on extended producer responsibility frameworks, plastic production caps, and financial mechanisms to support developing countries in managing plastic waste.
Domestic Innovation
Omani entrepreneurs and startups are developing innovative solutions to the plastic waste challenge, including biodegradable packaging alternatives, plastic-to-fuel conversion technologies, and AI-powered waste sorting systems. The government supports these innovations through grants, incubator programs, and preferential procurement policies.
A Global Movement
World Environment Day was first launched in 1973 under the slogan “Only One Earth” and has since become the world’s largest platform for environmental awareness. In 2025, South Korea hosted the official celebrations on Jeju Island. World Environment Day Oman 2025 demonstrated the Sultanate’s commitment to being an active participant in this global movement, translating international commitments into concrete local action.
