The Environment Authority has signed a number of agreements to deliver research projects under its Strategic Research Management Programme, with the aim of supporting scientific research and developing innovative solutions to environmental challenges — in line with the targets of Oman Vision 2040, the Oman Environment Strategy and the national Net Zero 2050 commitment.

Who Signed

The agreements were signed on behalf of the Environment Authority by Eng Sulaiman bin Nasser Al Akhzami, Vice Chairman of the Authority. Signing alongside him were Dr Ali bin Saud Al Bimani, President of the National University of Science and Technology; Dr Al Ameer bin Nasser Al Alawi, Vice Chancellor for Administrative and Financial Affairs at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences; and Dr Salah bin Soumar Al Zadjali, Director General of Research Programmes and Capacity Building at the Research Council.

What the Research Covers

The agreements cover research projects to monitor and manage plastic waste in both terrestrial and marine environments and to develop sustainable solutions and mechanisms to reduce it.

They also include the development of environmentally friendly cooling technologies that contribute to lowering greenhouse gas emissions and reducing the carbon footprint — a significant area for a country where cooling demand represents a substantial share of electricity consumption.

Together, the projects are intended to strengthen environmental innovation and support Oman’s sustainable development priorities.

Turning Research into Decisions

The signing took place on the sidelines of a workshop titled “Reviewing the Outputs and Results of Strategic Research Projects,” organised by the Authority to present the most significant findings of research delivered under the strategic research programme and to highlight its role in supporting environmental decision-making and developing scientific solutions to national challenges.

Dr Mohammed bin Saif Al Kalbani, Director General of Environmental Compliance at the Authority, stressed in his remarks the importance of strengthening partnership between the Authority and academic institutions, and of converting research outputs into applied practice.

The model on display — government defining the problem, universities running the research, and results feeding back into regulation — is precisely the exchange the Scientific Conference at Oman Climate Week 2026 is built around.

Oman Climate Week 2026 takes place 14–16 September at the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre in Muscat, with dedicated tracks on renewable energy and climate change and on sustainable waste management.
